Sonam was born on June 9, 1985 in Chembur, Bombay. She is the niece of film-maker Boney Kapoor, and actor, Sanjay Kapoor. The family has good connections within the Bollywood. Her cousin, Arjun, Boney's son is an up and coming movie director. Sonam Kapoor is a newcomer to the Indian film industry. She came into limelight after she signed her first film for a lead role with great Indian director Sanjay Leela Bhansali of Devdas and Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam fame. At present she is one of the most famour newcomer in indian industry.
Sonam Kapoor did her schooling from Arya Vidya Mandir and majored in Theater Arts and Chinese History from United World College of East Asia. She completed her masters in Political Science and Economics from Bombay University. Sonam Kapoor was considerably overweight, she decided to lose her weight and she start taking acting and diction classes. Her mother was against her acting, she wants that she get a college education, and then eventually marry and settle down.
Sonam Kapoor assisted Sanjay Leela Bhansali during the filming of 'Black' and often went to Mumbai's infamous Chor Bazar near Grant Road Railway Station to shop for props. She has made her first appearance in Bollywood with 'Saanwariya' opposite Ranbir Kapoor. Sonam Kapoor loves to read, write, paint, go shopping, and play video games, basket-ball and squash. She is expert in Sindhi, Hindi, English and Punjabi language. Sonam Kapoor was fond of reading from the childhood. Due to her reading habit she develped a habit of writing and that habit makes her a good writer. Sonam Kapoor is also a good painter.
