Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy
Reddy was born on 8th July 1949 to late Sri Y.S.Raja Reddy in a small town in the Kadapa district of Andhra Pradesh, Pulivendula. He is the second of five brothers. Traditionally the Reddy family have been large land-owners in southern Andhra Pradesh but made its fortunes in the 1970s and 1980s mining barite, an industrial mineral used in the oil industry. According to the mother of Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy, it was his grandfather who was converted by a British missionary, Father Rolls. The family was kicked out by the local community of the village. When in 1947, the Church of South India was formed and they began to attend the Church Services.
Right from his student days Rajasekhara Reddy showed interest in politics. He served as President of the Students union while studying in M R Medical College, Gulbarga, Karnataka. He was elected leader of the House Surgeon`s Association in S V Medical College, Tirupati. In the year 1971, YSR was married to Smt. Vijayalakshmi and the couple has a son, Jagan Mohan Reddy and a daughter, Sharmila. Y S Vivekananda Reddy, an elected Lok Sabha member for Congress representing Cuddapah district is the brother of YSR.

For a brief period, he served as Medical Officer at the Jammalamadugu Mission Hospital after finishing MBBS in the Diocese of Nandyal. Named after his father late Y.S.Raja Reddy, in 1973, at Pulivendula, he established a 70-bed charitable hospital. To date the hospital continues to serve the poor. One polytechnic and one degree college in Pulivendula, was established by his family, which were later handed over to the well-known Loyola group of institutions. Sound business insight, entrepreneurial skills, and, above all, his transparency brought Rajasekhara Reddy to the glory in the business arena.
YSR got married to Smt.Vijayalakshmi in1971 and is blessed with a son and a daughter. A proud grand-dad he is, YSR enjoys the company of his grand children to the brim – needless to mention here that he rarely finds any time to spare for his family members. His busy schedule hardly allows him to steal a few moments for his family. YSR’s son emerged a successful entrepreneur to the utmost pleasure of his father. Son Jagan Mohana Reddy, daughter-in-law Bharathi, their children, daughter Sharmila, son-in-law Anil Kumar and their children enjoy a very special place in YSR’s world.
Y. S Rajasekhara Reddy's Bell 430 helicopter went missing on Wednesday, September 2, 2009 at 9:35 am. Begumpet and Shamshabad Air Traffic controllers lost contact with the chopper at 9:02 am while it was passing through the dense Nallamala forest area. The Chief Secretary of Andhra Pradesh, P. Ramakanth Reddy, said that bad weather had forced the helicopter off-course. Although the sparsely populated forest area is considered to be stronghold of the outlawed Naxal communist insurgents, the National Security Advisor of India ruled out the possibility of the Naxals bringing down the helicopter.
