Raj Babbar, a Punjabi, is a product of the National School of Drama. He was born on 23rd June, 1952 in Agra. He is an alumnus of the 1975 batch of National School of Drama and graduated from Agra College. He married Nadira Zaheer, daughter of his Professor at NSD. He has 2 children from her: Arya Babbar (actor/journalist) and Juhi Babbar (actor). His second marriage was to Smita Patil, the renowned Bollywood actor. She died while giving birth to their son Prateek Babbar. Prateek was last seen in Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na (2008), in a small but widely acclaimed role.
Raj Babbar was a Delhi stage artist before he was discovered by Prakash Mehra. He wanted to introduce Babbar in films like 'Namak Halal' and "Shakti" but things did not work as well as they would have liked. Babbar was not disappointed. He continued his struggle before he was launched by B. R. Chopra in a negative role. Raj Babbar is a member of Parliament Raj Babbar has been suspended from parliamentary board of the Samajwadi Party (SP) for criticizing party leader Amar Singh & a 3-member committee to take further action in the matter.
