Quotes

Phil Collins
  • It's actually come as quite a shock to learn just how many people don't like me. - Unknown

  • I'm tired of defending the fact that we (Genesis) wrote three and four minute songs and had a bit of success. - Unknown

  • When I'm playing a song I'll often think about how another drummer might play it, and try to be that player in my performance of the song. Often I'll think, 'How would Keith Moon play this?' And I'll don my Keith Moon hat. For another song I'll think about John Bonham, or even on occasion Stewart Copeland, but more often than any other drummer I think about Ringo. 'That's All,' from Genesis, is a Ringo Starr drum part. 'Through These Walls,' from Hello, I Must be Going, is a Ringo drum part. - Unknown

  • A lot of the older fans think that Genesis should be a brand name for progressive rock or whatever, but actually Genesis is the name for a group of songwriters who have always done whatever they felt like doing under that banner. - Unknown

  • As far as I'm concerned he is a far more intellectual writer and person than me, and I have a directness that maybe he hasn't. I love this man and his music very much. Comparisons don't do either of us any favors, and in fact if we hadn't been in the same band for 4 years 30 years ago, no one would even think of making a comparison. - Unknown

Biography

Phil Collins
Last Updated: Friday, August 07, 2009

phil collinsPhilip David Charles "Phil" Collins, LVO, (born 30 January 1951 in Chiswick, London) is an English singer-songwriter, drummer, keyboardist and actor best known as the lead singer and drummer of English progressive rock group Genesis and as a Grammy and Academy Award-winning solo artist. He has also appeared in several films. Collins sang the lead vocals on eight American chart-toppers between 1984 and 1989; seven as a solo artist and one with Genesis. His singles, often dealing with lost love, ranged from the drum-heavy "In the Air Tonight", to the dance pop of "Sussudio", to the political statements of his most successful song, "Another Day in Paradise". His international popularity transformed Genesis from a progressive rock group to a regular on the pop charts and an early MTV mainstay. Collins` professional career began as a drummer, first with obscure rock group Flaming Youth and then more famously with Genesis.

phil collinsIn Genesis, Collins originally supplied backing vocals for front man Peter Gabriel, singing lead on only two songs: "For Absent Friends" from 1971`s Nursery Cryme album and "More Fool Me" from Selling England by the Pound, which was released in 1973. On Gabriel`s departure in 1975, Collins became the group`s lead singer. As the decade closed, Genesis`s first international hit, "Follow You, Follow Me", demonstrated a drastic change from the band`s early years. His concurrent solo career, heavily influenced by his personal life, brought both him and Genesis commercial success. According to Atlantic Records, Collins` total worldwide sales as a solo artist, as of 2002, were 150 million.Collins is a supporter of animal rights and People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA). In 2005, he donated autographed drumsticks in support of PETA`s campaign against Kentucky Fried Chicken.
