- In 1988 he broke Don Drysdale's famous record of 58 2/3 consecutive scoreless innings and now holds the record with 59.
- He was a member of the 1987, '88, '89 All-Star teams.
- After retiring in 2000, he became an analyst for ESPN before becoming a pitching coach for the Texas Rangers.
- Was a pitcher for the National League's Los Angeles Dodgers (1983-1994 & 2000), San Francisco Giants (1998), and New York Mets (1999); and the American League's Cleveland Indians (1995-1997).
