Indian politician Meira Kumar was born in Patna, Bihar as the daughter of former Deputy Prime Minister and famous dalit leader Jagjivan Ram and freedom fighter Indrani Devi. She is the holder of MA in English, LL.B and advanced diploma in Spanish. She is married to Supreme Court lawyer Manjul Kumar and they have three children. In 1973, she joined the Indian Foreign Service and worked at embassies in Spain, United Kingdom and Mauritius. In 1985, she was entered in politics and was elected from Bijnor in Uttar Pradesh. She was a member of the Lok Sabha for five times.
She hold many political positions including General-Secretary of AICC, member of Congress Working Committee (C.W.C), member of Public Accounts Committee , member of Joint committee on the Empowerment of women and its Sub-Committee on Education and Health Programmes for women, member of Committee on Food and Consumer Affairs, member of Committee on Environment and Forests and Union Cabinet Minister of Social Justice and Empowerment. She is very much devoted to human rights and cancellation of caste system. She always worked for scheduled castes and scheduled tribes and held several meetings and demonstrations and also filed cases in supreme court to ensure justice to them.
She has been actively participating in movements which are related to social reforms, human rights and democracy. She supports Arjun Singh’s reservation policy for OBCs and also wants the government to offer a reward of Rs. 50,000 for inter-caste marriages. Other than politics, she also served as founder president of “All India Samta Movement”, president of “Ravidas Smarak Society”, chairperson of “Meera Kala Mandir”, president of “Jagjivan Seva Ashram”, president of “RVAKV Society” Delhi, member of “Senate Punjab University” and “Senate Bihar University”, member of “Supreme Court Bar Association” etc. She is also a lover of sports and holds medals for rifle shooting. Also she is a poetess and wrote many poems in Hindi.
