Trivia

Katherine Fugate
  • One of the things Katherine Fugate enjoyed most about writing an episode for Xena was that she was flown down to New Zealand for twelve days while it was shooting and got to spend some of her off time with Claire Stansfield.
  • Katherine Fugate lives her life by the motto "carpe diem", or "seize the day".
  • When she was ten,her aunt gave Katherine her first diary and suggested she write down her thoughts. The first line of her journal was, "I'm a decade old now, a lot happens in a decade".
  • When asked to name some of her influences, Katherine Fugate responded that Tom Robbins, Richard Matheson and Paulo Coehlo were the authors that she reads all the time.
  • Since Katherine Fugate is a feature writer as well as a very popular writer for the series Xena Warrior Princess she has been selected by Rob Tapert to write the Xena movie if it should be produced.
  • When the producers of Xena finally called and said, 'Okay, we have an episode,' she was in London on a feature assignment for a movie that she was writing, so she couldn't do it. She felt heartbroken, since she thought it was all over, but about two months later she got another call saying, 'We have an assignment but no story. Can you come up with one?' The resulting episode was "When Fates Collide".
  • Katherine Fugate was quite surprised when she was invited by Rob Tapert to New Zealand for the filming of her Xena episode "When Fates Collide". Her experience in writing features was that the writer is only wanted around the set on smaller budget films, and is unwelcome on the set of bigger budget movies.
  • She pronounces her last name Fugate as "Few-jhay". It's of French origin, and it was spelled by her ancestors as Fuget.
  • Katherine Fugate wrote the 2004 feature film The Prince & Me which starred Julia Stiles.
  • When she sent a prospective script to the Producers of the show Xena Warrior Princess, RJ Stewart, the Head Writer told her, "You got in the offices because you knew to spell Xena with an "X". Apparently many aspiring writers made the mistake of spelling it with a "Z".

Quotes

Katherine Fugate
  • "I was in law school in my own life and I quit. I quit when I understood that 95% of the time I would be defending a guilty person. I was going to be a public defender and I thought, "I can't get rapists, murderers or molesters off because I'm clever."
  • "How did Gabrielle kmow how to get to the Temple of the Fates? (her reply) Yahoo maps?"
  • "I was a strange little girl who wrote her own little morality plays and put them up in her backyard, charging neighbors twenty-five cents admission, but making sure they were well fed with a handful of Hot Tamales and a Dixie cup full of pink lemonade. In my plays, Someone always died. Someone was always filled with regret. Someone was always a hero. Someone always learned their lesson too late. I was told I was strange. I'm still strange, but I've gotten used to it."
  • "Carpe diem is my motto. I may falter, I may mess it up, but I try to speak my truth, believing it's all I have. So that's it- that's my theme- make a difference, blow their minds, touch some hearts, embolden some souls."
  • "There are similar themes in everything I write which are either seize the day, or fate and destiny; things like that are very important to me. Actually, this was an idea I had to write a movie about, but I didn't know how to do it. So I took that principle and put it into my Xena episode, because it enabled me to get the two themes out that I wanted to."
  • "My goal would be to help young writers because I've been there. Perhaps this would be by answering questions, because sometimes people feel embarrassed about asking and would like to have anonymity. They might say, 'I have a question about screen adaptations,' or, 'How do you write when you're blocked?' Things like that mean a lot to me, because I had that mentoring, and that's how I got where I am today. So I hope I can do that for somebody else."

Biography

Katherine Fugate
Last Updated: Tuesday, November 03, 2009

Katherine FugateBorn in Southern California, Katherine Fugate first started out as a child actor on stage since she was 6. She went on to graduate from the University of California, Riverside with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Theatre. She blames her attraction to the arts on her aunt, Barbara Eden of "I Dream of Jeannie" (1965) fame. She was a production assistant on several films and fetched coffee for directors before she worked at ICM, a talent and literary agency. Katherine Fugate worked for literary agent Barry Mendel, who is now a successful producer. Realizing she was never meant to be an agent, she worked as an assistant at 20th Century Fox, working on movies like Alien³ (1992), This Is My Life (1992) and The Good Son (1993), until she became an executive herself on the Columbia Pictures lot. John Cox, who is now a screenwriter, was then her assistant.

Katherine Fugate says it was the Northridge Earthquake that gave her clarity to remember she wanted to write, so she abandoned her film executive career to become a writer. She told our class it wasn't easy and didn't happen quickly. That sometimes dreams take time, but you have to be responsible for them. (That was my favorite thing she said.) She delivered Chinese food and flowers before she finally made it.

The film Carolina (2003/I) is loosely based on her life, with Julia Stiles playing her. She said a lot of great things about Julia. She also appears at Xena conventions, teaches writing seminars to new writers (where I heard her speak) and she talks to teen groups about her mother's alcoholism and cousin's drug abuse because she doesn't want them to feel alone and hopes to "make a difference".She just had a daughter she named Madeleine Barbara ("Madeleine" is after writer Madeleine L'Engle and "Barbara" is after her aunt). She also plays the drums and is big fan of the New Orleans Saints.
