James Hetfield is a heavy metal rock musician known for being one of the core members of the American heavy metal band Metallica.James Hetfield was born James Alan Hetfield in Downey, California in the year 1963. His birthday is the third of August. James Hetfield's parents were both extreme advocates of the religion Christian Science, which opposes modern medicine in favor of the power of faith to heal. As a result, James Hetfield's mother died of cancer without treatment when he was young. James Hetfield was interested in music at a young age, learning piano and guitar as a boy. In his teenage years, he started a band called Obsession, that mostly played in his friends' garage.
His next band was "Phantom Lord", a heavy rock band formed at Brea Olinda High School in Brea, California, followed by "Leather Charm". He then met Lars Ulrich, which whom he would make up the core of the phenomenally successful rock band Metallica.Since its formation in 1981, Metallica has sold nearly one hundred million albums. They are world famous, but most popular in America. Their first great success was with the second album in 1984, "Ride the Lightning", which combined their heavy thrash sound with more quiet classical music inspired pieces. The album helped them sign a record contract with Elektra Records and find work opening for Ozzy Osbourne.
"Ride the Lightning" would become recognized as one of the best heavy metal albums ever, and Metallica's success continued through the late eighties and nineties with albums such as "...And Justice for All" and "Metallica" (the Black Album). Their sound changed over the late nineties with the albums "Load", "ReLoad", and an unusual performance with the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra in "Metallica S&M". As of early 2007 James Hetfield continues to play in the band Metallica and is current working on a new album, though the popularity of the band has waned in recent years with Metallica's highly publicized role in the trial against Napster.
