  • The Tigers retired his number 16 in 1997, and he died a year later following a long illness.
  • After retirement, Newhouser worked as a scout for the Houston Astros, Baltimore Orioles, Cleveland Indians, and the Tigers.
  • In 1992, he was elected to the National Baseball Hall of Fame.
  • He is the only pitcher ever to win two consecutive MVP awards.
  • He ended his career with a record of 207-150 and a 3.06 ERA, marks well in line with many baseball Hall of Fame pitchers.
