Quotes

Billy Ray Cyrus
  • "Miley and I have a great relationship. I think it's important as parents and neighbors that we spend quality time with children and to encourage others in our communities to do the same."
  • "She was born with a song. Musically, she is, this is the only time I'm going to brag, she's the real deal musically. I can't wait for you to hear what she's been writing and the songs that come from inside of her. You know the saying she's got an old soul? Well, she's got an old soul, and her old soul's got a lot of soul."
  • "I tried to discourage Miley from pursuing the entertainment business, because it's a double-edged sword. For everything that makes you happy, there's something equally heartbreaking. I kind of tried to steer her away from being in this business. I told her, "Just stay in school and do cheerleading. Be a normal kid." Well, you can see now how well she listened to me!"
  • "There was one time where it got really crazy with Miley and the paparazzi, and I wasn't there. The next day, I found every single one of those guys and said, "Guys, this is man-to-man; put your cameras down, and let me talk to you." We sat underneath a shaded tree, and I said, "Look, my little girl is 15, and you guys scared her to death. Get yourselves together!" They apologized, and it's been different ever since."
  • "She was born Destiny Hope, but she's always gone by Miley. I tried to talk her out of it, but she had her heart set on it. My name is Billy Ray, and my father's name is Ronald Ray, so I think she just wanted to keep up the tradition. Now I'm changing my name, too. I'm going to be Billy Hope!"
  • "It's going great. This is what I love to do--make music and throw in a little acting on the side."
  • "I've never been big on discipline. I try to be a friend to all my kids. I try to be the one they want to talk to when they're having a problem. I think they're going to be all right, but I'm the last one to cast a stone at any of these kids, because heck, man, I've made mistakes along the way. I happen to be very good at making mistakes. But like my dad always said, "When you make a mistake, stand still, figure it out, and then take a step in the right direction".
  • "I don't like to argue. I hate confrontation. And I just, you know, I just want everything to be smooth. I want the whole world to be smooth. I want everyone to quit fighting and killing each other, and just love each other. If the whole world could just do something really nice for their fellow man on one given day, it might save us from self-destructing as a human race."

Biography

Billy Ray Cyrus
Last Updated: Tuesday, October 27, 2009

Bill Ray CyrusSinger, songwriter, actor. Born on August 25, 1961, in Flatwoods, Kentucky. Once famous for his international hit country song, “Achy Breaky Heart,” his hunky good looks, and mullet hairstyle, Billy Ray Cyrus has built a career as an actor as well as a singer. The son of a politician, he started his singing career performing gospel music in a group with his father. Cyrus went on to form the band Sly Dog in the early 1980s, and later found success as a solo artist, signing a recording contract with Mercury Records in 1990. His first album, Some Gave All (1992), hit the top of the pop and country charts, driven in part of the success of the single “Achy Breaky Heart.” The up-tempo song about heartbreak became a huge sensation, inspiring its own dance. His follow-up album It Won’t Be the Last (1993) also had strong sales, but no big crossover hits like his first recording.

Subsequent albums fared well on the country charts, reaching the top 20 with Storm in the Heartland (1994), Trail of Tears (1996), and Southern Rain (2000). But Cyrus was unable to shake the expectations that came with “Achy Breaky Heart” as he struggled to prove himself to be more than a one-hit wonder. In 1999, he began acting, making a guest appearance on The Love Boat and later landing a small part on David Lynch’s television film, Mulholland Drive. In 2001, Cyrus took on the lead role in the medical drama Doc. He played Clint Cassidy, a country doctor who moves to New York City for love, only to experience heartbreak. Even after being dumped, he decides to stay in the city and work for an HMO. The series aired on the PAX television network and this family-friendly show earned its share of fans. Some of Cyrus’s music also found its way on to the program as well, including tracks from his 2000 album Southern Rain. The show ended in 2004.

Cyrus wasn’t off television for long. He returned in 2006 in the role of Robby Stewart, the father of two in the Disney Channel’s Hannah Montana. The show features a young teenager named Miley Stewart—played by Cyrus’s own daughter Miley—with a secret life as a pop music sensation known as Hannah Montana. The father-daughter team recorded the song “I Learned for You” for the show’s soundtrack. They also recorded a song together for his latest album, Wanna Be Your Joe (2006).In 2007, Cyrus joined the ranks of such celebrity competitors as Olympic speedskater Apolo Anton Ohno, singer Joey Fatone, and actor Ian Ziering on the popular series Dancing with the Stars. While he struggled with his dance routines, he lasted for eight weeks of the competition, which was eventually won by Ohno.Cyrus lives in Tennessee with his wife Leticia and their five children.
